Thirty-six is a small crossroads of number. It is 6², a perfect square — and also the eighth triangular number (1 + 2 + … + 8), the smallest number after 1 that is both at once. It is the sum of the first three cubes (1³ + 2³ + 3³ = 36), the count into which the Egyptians cut the night sky, and — for a quarter-century — the very definition of the metre was written in the orange light of element 36, krypton. Krypton sits at atomic number 36, a heavy, inert noble gas — but for twenty-three years it held one of the most fundamental jobs in all of measurement. From 1960 to 1983, the metre — the base unit of length for the whole world — was defined as exactly 1,650,763.73 wavelengths of the orange-red light emitted by an atom of krypton-86. Every ruler and every map was, in principle, calibrated against the glow of element 36.
That reign ended only when the metre was tied to the speed of light instead, a still more universal standard. Krypton lives on in bright white lighting — including some airport runway and photographic flash lamps — and its name, from the Greek kryptos, “hidden,” recalls how long this abundant-yet-invisible gas escaped discovery. For a generation, though, the length of everything was measured in the light of 36.

It is a perfect square, 6 × 6; and it is a triangular number, the sum 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 — so 36 dots can be laid out either as a solid square or as a neat triangle. After 1, it is the very first number that can be both, a coincidence rare enough that the next one is not until 1,225.
It hides a second gem: 36 = 1³ + 2³ + 3³ = 1 + 8 + 27, the sum of the first three cubes — and that equals (1 + 2 + 3)², the square of their sum. This is a case of a beautiful general law (the sum of the first n cubes is always a perfect square), and 36 is where it first shows its full colours.

In 1782 the great mathematician Leonhard Euler posed a puzzle: can you arrange 36 officers — six ranks drawn from six different regiments — in a 6×6 square so that every row and every column contains one officer of each rank and one from each regiment? Euler tried, failed, and conjectured it was impossible. He was right: in 1901 Gaston Tarry proved, by exhaustive checking, that no such arrangement of the 36 exists.
The “36 officers problem” became a landmark in combinatorics — the study of arrangements — and its shadow reaches into the design of experiments and error-correcting codes today. (In a modern twist, physicists found a quantum version of the impossible square that can be solved, if the officers are allowed to be in superposition.) A number, 36, that draws a hard line around what can and cannot be arranged.

The ancient Egyptians divided the band of the sky into 36 decans — 36 star-groups spaced ten degrees apart around the circle (36 × 10° = 360°). Through the night, one decan after another rose over the horizon, and by counting them the Egyptians told the hours of darkness — the decans painted across the ceilings of tombs and the lids of coffins as a star-clock for the dead. It is one of the deepest roots of our division of the day: the twelve hours of night grew out of watching those 36 rising stars.

In every generation, the teaching goes, there are 36 hidden just people, unknown even to themselves, and it is for their sake that the world is allowed to endure; if even one were missing, it would collapse. (The name is the Hebrew letters that spell 36.) It is a moral legend, not a measurement — a story about goodness carried quietly by ordinary, unnoticed people — and it has kept its hold on the imagination for two thousand years.

36 is a workhorse of measurement because it divides so many ways. There are 36 inches in a yard (3 feet of 12), and the circle's 360 degrees is 36 tens — the same decan-logic the Egyptians used. Its abundance of divisors (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 36) is exactly why so many old systems of length, angle and time reach for 36 and its round cousin 360: a number you can split into halves, thirds, quarters, sixths and ninths without ever leaving a remainder.
