The real cycle measured today is about 25772 years, giving a rate of 50.3 arcsec/yr and a period near 25,771.6 years. The 25,920 figure is the tidy arithmetic that falls out of rounding to 72 — close to reality but idealised, not the observed constant.

In Hamlet's Mill (1969), de Santillana and von Dechend argued that 72 — the years-per-degree of precession — was deliberately encoded into Norse, Greek, Indian and Mesoamerican myth as a hidden astronomical archive, later amplified by Graham Hancock. The arithmetic they cite is sound: precession really is ~1° per 72 years.
Mainstream scholarship regards the transmission thesis as unproven. 72 is such a common, highly divisible number — and appears for pentagon geometry, calendars and round counting quite independently — that its recurrence in myth is widely read as a look-elsewhere / cherry-picking effect rather than a decoded precession constant.
