Todeschini and the 420 Code

Marco Todeschini (1899–1988), Italian engineer. Foundational book: La teoria delle apparenze: spazio-dinamica e psico-bio-fisica (1949), nearly a thousand pages. Three stacks, kept apart

What he proposed

Space is a physical, rarefied fluid. Its motions — vortices, waves, pressure, rotation — are the physics from which matter and forces appear. He called that space-dynamics. Sensations are not in the apple or the air. They occur in the psyche. Ten psychophysical equations are supposed to generalise Newton, the striking one being sensation S = ma. The system then climbs to soul and God. The name is the climb: psyche, biology, physics.

What followers claim

The Circolo lists hundreds of papers and, at the far end, 830 discoveries. A line attributed to Wolfgang Pauli — that each would deserve a Nobel — should be treated as a movement’s story until the Pauli document is in hand. Later products borrow “psychobiophysics” for devices and healing claims he did not establish. Those products are a third literature.

What science accepts

The luminiferous ether was retired after experiments, Michelson–Morley among them, failed to find the Earth’s motion through it. Special relativity removed the need. Todeschini’s reply — failure to detect the old ether does not mean space is empty — was not adopted. Relativity stayed. His framework did not become the replacement.

The 420 Code

One premise: a record exists. Four properties, {S, B, R, C}. One measured input, α. The substrate “from which space and time are written” is, in the Structural Glossary, “not a material, not a field.” Dark energy is “the finished bale, never empty space.” AP08 claims Einstein’s equations as a theorem. Two registered predictions have already fired and stay on the wall at the420code.org. The arithmetic can be re-run at Frozen Predictions. Whether the closed forms are physics remains open. That limit is printed on particle-bench.

The rhyme

Both want one substrate, and then matter, forces, life, and experience as readings of it. Both say the world you meet is a translation. Both refuse to stop at dead stuff. That is the overlap worth keeping.

His twelve steps, against the Code

Space isn’t nothing. Rhyme The glossary’s dark energy is content at rest, “never empty space… not vacuum.”
Space is a physical medium. Fork The substrate entry forbids the ether reading in one sentence: not a material, not a field, closer to the domain the axiom operates on.
The medium moves. Partial The Code has an α-flow, leakage out and replenishment back, “what makes the substrate appear stable.” That is a break being processed, not a current in a fluid.
Vortices make matter. Absent The only vortex in the library is a metaphor beside a stone and a snowflake: form without intention. Particles are not whirlpools. Mass, in Notebook V, is geometric resistance. The electron is the minimum stable excitation of the broken symmetry.
Those dynamics become forces. Rhyme Shared ambition. His construction is fluid mechanics. The Code’s arena is 3+1, two sectors, twenty-one coupling channels, the same 21 asked to set the proton count, the gravitational exponent, and the visible fraction.
Matter meets organisms. Rhyme Living things are persistence-mode 2: a pattern kept by records of the pattern. A bacterium is already an operator. Consciousness is not required for that.
The nervous system converts. Partial In The Illusion of the Other the nervous system is why separateness feels obvious. Hunger, pain, and touch say “protect this body.” It is a survival map. It is not the sensation.
The psyche experiences. Fork He puts sensation in an immaterial psyche and writes S = ma. The Code splits the operator — the coupling happening now — from the narrator, the downstream record that reports after the fact. Notebook VII says the body of work does not solve the hard problem. The qualitative character stays open.
Physics and psychology are one reality. Rhyme The Code pushes the same axioms on into ethics. Kindness is a derivation about windows, not a commandment added later.
Mind is not ordinary dead stuff. Partial Both say the universe you can love or injure includes awareness. He infers a non-material domain. The Code says awareness arises within what exists, and still does not claim to have closed qualia.
Therefore a separate spiritual dimension. Fork His climb adds a third category. Being After Religion treats an external God as the design that sanctifies separateness. The personal-I closes at death. The structural-I, one interior, does not.
One ontology. Rhyme His name for it is psychobiophysics. Theirs is “one record exists; everything else is consequence.”

The four rabbit holes

Space-dynamics

Notebook II and the Leakage Theorem in Notebook IV are the nearest chapters. Both want the forces as faces of one process. He resurrects a fluid in order to replace Einstein. The Code claims the field equations, cosmological constant included, from the axioms plus Lovelock in 3+1. On this page relativity is a result being checked, not an enemy.

Mind and body

His chain is disturbance, sense organ, nerve, psyche, sensation. The Code’s chain is break, coupling, operator, narrator, window. The piece that still feels modern in both is the same: the nerve impulse is not the redness. He then writes a Newtonian law for the feeling. The Code stops and leaves the qualia question live.

Appearances

This is the strongest philosophical overlap, and it is aimed at a different target. He asks where the redness of the apple is, and answers: not in the apple. The Code asks whether “I am here and you are there” is the structure of the world, and answers: it is how the world looks from one window. Primary and secondary qualities are his problem. The illusion of separateness is the Code’s. Both are translations. They translate different things.

Spiritual physics

He climbs matter, life, consciousness, soul, God, and the upper rungs are a non-material domain because sensations exist and are not material. The Code climbs the same ladder and folds the top back in. Religious names are acknowledged as names for one interior. An outside God is treated as a mistake about where the mystery sits.

What not to collapse

There is no ether in the 420 Code, no vortex-particle, no S = ma, no campaign to supersede Einstein, and no separate soul-substance. Nothing Todeschini got right, if he got something right, is evidence for the Code. Nothing the Code’s arithmetic reproduces is evidence for a space-fluid. The local proof recomputes published formulas. The proof’s own sentence is the one to keep: reproducing the arithmetic shows the formulas are real. Whether they are physics is still for specialists.

The question that survives the machinery is his, and it is also the Code’s. Can the split between physical process, living process, and experience be different readings of one process? He answers with a fluid. The Code answers with a record. Contemporary physics has accepted neither answer. The page can hold the question without promoting the fluid, and without promoting the record past its kill switches.
