Morphic resonance and the 420 Code

Both say form and memory are something the universe does, not a filing cabinet inside matter. Sheldrake says nature learns, and the laws are habits. The Code writes a record that cannot be undone, and then refuses to let the constants drift.

Rupert Sheldrake, biologist. The hypothesis of formative causation is his, first in A New Science of Life (1981), then The Presence of the Past (1988). His own current statement is quoted below from sheldrake.org. This page is AJ Greyling’s. It is not his, and it is not an Artist’s Proof. Grades: the series.

What he actually says

“Morphic resonance is a process whereby self-organising systems inherit a memory from previous similar systems. In its most general formulation, morphic resonance means that the so-called laws of nature are more like habits.”

That is the load-bearing sentence, in his words. The rest of the hypothesis follows from it.

The experimental programme is the part a sceptic has to keep in view, because the idea is large and the tests are small. New compounds should crystallise more readily once they have crystallised somewhere. A skill should get easier as more creatures learn it, including creatures that never met the first learners. In 1992 he and Steven Rose ran a blind chick experiment in Rose’s lab. Sheldrake read a secular trend in the latencies and called it support. Rose called the hypothesis empty, disputed the reading, and said the result disconfirmed it. They published the disagreement side by side. In 2026 Sheldrake, Black, and Butzer tested the learning prediction on Wordle. Study 1 did not find the predicted drop in attempts through the day. Study 2 saw more early solves from morning to evening. Study 3 did not replicate that. Their own conclusion: if the effect is real, it is subtle and easy to wash out. Nature’s editor, John Maddox, titled his 1981 response “A book for burning?” The hypothesis was not adopted. Sheldrake has spent the decades since arguing that the dismissal came before the tests. Both of those facts can stand. A harsh review is not a measurement, and a measurement the experimenters cannot agree how to read is not a law of nature.

The stacks

Sheldrake
Formative causation. Nature has a memory. Similarity is the channel. Repetition strengthens a habit. Genes supply parts; fields supply form. The past of the species is available to a new member without a molecule travelling.
Followers
The hypothesis gets borrowed for prayer, archetype, animal telepathy, and a general permission to treat any unexplained coordination as a field. He sometimes walks that far himself — the stare, the phone call, the flock — and he also marks where the hypothesis only reaches by adding more hypotheses. The borrowed version usually drops the mark.
Accepted science
Developmental biology already had morphogenetic fields, meaning spatially organised signals inside an embryo. That is a different object from a memory shared with every past embryo of the species. Genetics, epigenetics, and local physics remain the working account of inheritance and form. No morphic field is in the instruments. The Wordle paper’s own mixed result is the current public shape of the learning claim: not established, not neatly killed in every dataset, not a constant you can freeze.
The 420 Code
Axiom R: a distinction, once made, persists. Record-history is “the structurally preserved past at any site… Information is record-history; what is forgotten is what R has not carried.” Constraint: a record is somewhere, not everywhere. Propagation to other sites is finite. In our universe that rate is the speed of light. Living persistence, mode 2, is a pattern regenerating itself from records of its own pattern. The constants are readings of one break, written down before the measurement. Two have fired. They stay shown.

The matrix

ClaimWhere they stand
The past is still at work in the present He means every previous similar system. The Code means the record this site has actually carried, plus what has propagated to it Partial
Form is more than the list of parts His form is a field with a memory of other forms. The Code’s form is structure: geometric resistance, a pattern that keeps itself by reading its own records Rhyme
Laws are habits that strengthen with repetition That sentence is his general formulation. A frozen prediction is the Code’s. A constant that got easier every time a proton formed would make the scoreboard meaningless Fork
The influence does not care about distance Resonance is like-upon-like, not a signal that falls off. Constraint says records arrive at a finite rate. AP23’s “one record” is a different non-locality, and it is about one entangled state Fork
Memory is not a trace stored in the brain He tunes the brain like a receiver to other minds’ pasts. The Code’s narrator is a downstream record of this operator. The self is a loop that reads its own records Partial
Instinct is the species’ collective memory Joint structure in the Code is what coupled windows have written together. It is not a field you join by being a rat Absent
Mind is not sealed inside the skull He extends a field past the head. The Code instantiates one interior at each window. The personal-I is local and closes at death Partial
One account of form, habit, and mind Shared ambition. His answer learns. The Code’s answer is prior to the repetition Rhyme

Habits against a frozen number

This is the fork that decides whether the two systems can be welded.

Sheldrake’s deepest move is that what we call a law is a groove worn by repetition. The first crystal of a new kind is hard. The thousandth is easier, everywhere, because the field remembers. The universe acquires habits. That is why a crossword, a maze, a Wordle, should soften as strangers solve it. The channel is similarity, not contact, not descent, not a paper trail.

The 420 Code wears its constants the other way. α goes in once. The proton ratio, G, the neutron–proton gap, the dark-sector split, the age, the expansion rate, and the acceleration floor are supposed to come out as readings of a break that does not update because protons have been plentiful. The method on the420code.org is to write the number before the measurement and leave a fired switch on the wall. A habit-forming nature would move the target while you watched. The Code’s entire sceptic-facing posture — Frozen Predictions, kill switches, “two corpses shown” — is a bet that the structure does not learn.

There is a cycle in the glossary, and it is easy to mistake for a habit. The Actualization State “runs through cycles, each ending in defragmentation that restores the symmetric condition the next cycle’s break runs from.” That is a return to the same prior, not a groove getting deeper. Recurrence is not practice.

Persistence-mode 2 can also be misread as morphic resonance. A living pattern “uses records of its own pattern to regenerate the components and constraints that keep the pattern going, with enough fidelity for lineage and enough variation for selection.” The memory in that sentence is the lineage’s own record. It is not every past sparrow, available to a new egg because both are sparrows. Genes and selection are still doing the work the sentence leaves them. Sheldrake’s extra claim is the part about strangers.

Distance

Constraint is the axiom that blocks a casual merge. “A record is somewhere, not everywhere.” Bounded propagation is what Constraint produces. In this universe the bound is the speed of light. A formative influence that is indifferent to distance, available to every similar system at once, is a different architecture.

The Code does have a famous-sounding non-locality, and it should not be recruited. Notebook III, AP23, the Single Record: distance is a property of the manifold, not of the pre-state. An entangled state is one entity. The collapse is one actualisation, one record for one state. That is a claim about how to stop treating one quantum record as two distant objects. It is not a claim that a crystal in one laboratory teaches a crystal in another, and it is not a claim that a chick in week ten pecks differently because of chicks in week one whom it never met. Using Bell to launder morphic resonance is the same move as using “quantum” to launder a healing device. The page refuses it.

Memory and the window

Sheldrake’s memory is reception. The brain tunes. What it tunes to includes your own past and the past of similar systems. That is why he can sit next to Jung’s collective unconscious and then widen it from human experience to the whole universe: the collective memory is not a human specialty. It is how form works.

The Code’s memory is accumulation under R. The narrator “arrives after the fact.” It reports on the operator. It is one of the operator’s capacities. The self-reading loop — a coupling that reads its own records, writes records of the reading, and reads those — is what the self structurally is, and it closes at death. That is a local archive with a closing time. It is not a receiver left on for the species.

The place they genuinely rhyme is narrower. Both deny that a mind is a sealed lump of private matter whose only contents are traces. Sheldrake answers by extending a field past the skull, far enough that a stare might be felt and a flock might turn as one system. The Code answers with one interior, locally instantiated at each window: many views, one building. The personal-I dies. The structural-I is not a residue of other people’s learned skills sitting in a field you can dial. The museum line on the420code.org is the Code’s version of the writing and the reading: “A record is written and read in the same moment. The break is the writing. Awareness is the reading.” One event, two faces. Not a broadcast from every previous reader.

Notebook VII still says the qualitative character — why the pattern feels like something — remains open. Sheldrake’s extended field does not close that question either. A field that remembers a maze does not, by itself, explain why there is something it is like to be the rat.

What not to collapse

Morphic resonance is not hiding inside the 420 Code under another name. Record-history is not a species memory. The twenty-one channels are not morphic fields. The one interior is not an antenna. And the Code is not a refutation of Sheldrake. It is a different bet about whether nature practices.

What contemporary science has accepted is neither bet. Sheldrake’s best-known direct tests are disputed by the people who ran them with him, or come back mixed in his own later write-up. The Code’s arithmetic reproduces inside tolerances he published, and the proof on this site says in plain words that reproduction is not nature agreeing. A reader who likes both because both are “non-mainstream unification” has noticed a mood. The mood is not an overlap.

The question that is an overlap is this. Is form exhausted by parts in contact, and is memory exhausted by a store inside the thing that remembers? He says no: similar pasts haunt similar presents, and the haunting thickens into habit. The Code says no as well, and then points at a different no. A record persists. A pattern can keep itself by reading what it has already written. The structure those records express was not trained by the repetition. It was the condition of writing anything at all.

Sheldrake’s formulation, the 1992 Rose exchange, and the 2026 Wordle abstract are taken from his research page, linked above. Maddox’s editorial is Nature 293, 245–246 (24 September 1981); the title is named, the essay is not reproduced. Code quotations are from the Structural Glossary and Notebooks III and VII in G’s library, and from the public museum text on the420code.org.
